This active region is very close to the edge of the sun's disk, located on the left. Towards the left we are seeing the convection cells edge on, and since the sides are hotter than the tops, where they rise above the surrounding cells we see whiter (hotter) areas (plage). Towards the right, we are seeing the convection cell tops, of a more uniform temperature, resulting in the surface pattern called granulation. The large spot on the right and a couple of the smaller spots in the middle have light bridges crossing the umbra. Lots of small black pores are visible in addition to the larger spots.
